The Armor Re-release Controversy

The latest Hunt Pass, Alchemy of War, brought back the Ostian Armor, a set that was originally available in the Store for 2000 platinum, which translates to around $20. Players that purchased the armor were unhappy because it was included on the free track, when they had to pay money for it. Other players wanted to know if there would be an alternative reward if players already earned rewards in the Hunt Pass. Phoenix Labs responded on Reddit in a lengthy statement that covered several topics so I'll discuss the highlights.

Goals

• To create unique armor to fit a role (alchemist, barbarian, pirate...)

• To have armor available to players who didn't pay

Problems

• Elite Track players got two very similar armor sets

• The Free Track armor was a bit flat

• If a player didn't like the aesthetic of a Hunt Pass, they would have to wait more than a month for the next one

• If players can get everything in the game for free, nobody will pay

• If there is nothing good on the Free Track players have less motivation to play

Solutions

• Revisit old sets from the store

Reasoning

• In the case of Ostian armor, 0.0005% of players purchased it

• The armor is cool, but not promoted or on-season
